This  listing is for a FIXED PIN forming mandrel.  The “Sakakeeny Style” stainless steel mandrel pin (somewhat shorter & with a collar stop)
has been permanently mounted into a German made PFERD handle.  Do a search for the PFERD company, and you will see that they are a large German manufacturer of files and other hand tools.  This handle has been in production for years, and is used widely by guys who spend hours hand sharpening carbide chainsaw teeth.
The pronounced lip at the top of the handle is there for thumb placement, and for allowing adequate pressure into the reed as you go through the forming process.

The “Sakakeeny Style” stainless steel mandrel pin (somewhat shorter & with a collar stop)
is quite unique in that it is purposely
shorter in length so that it does not go too far beyond the first wire and has a precisely placed collar so that there is never any question about how far the mandrel pin should be inserted during the forming process. Here is a direct quote from Mr. Sakakeeny about his forming mandrel design:
“This method of forming the tube requires a forming mandrel that is not too long and that is fairly narrow at its tip. At full insertion, it should only extend a few millimeters past the first wire. At its bottom or hilt, it should be about 5mm in diameter. If the forming mandrel is too long, the cane will probably crack.”
Normally Mr. Sakakeeny prefers removable tips,  and recommends keeping the reed on the same forming mandrel tip during the 1-2 week drying process, as well as during the turks head wrapping process.  I have listings for those removable tips and the companion drying racks that go with them in my store.  They are also sold on Justin Millers site as well.

Additionally, this handle is different from my other handles, or other removable pin handles sold by other bassoon specialty houses, in that the pin is permanently fixed into the handle using high grade marine epoxy, and is intended  specifically for use with fixed pin drying racks.
