with
*FREE
Solid Maple Rack
(with purchase of 4 or more mandrel pins)
made from
High grade Stainless Steel
for use with
“Traditional” handles
(price is for single tip)
International buyers are welcome!
This listing is for George Sakakeeny’s custom designed forming mandrel tips.  See below for details on this design.  This listing is specifically for the traditional 1/4″ circular based tips & the price listed is for one tip. Additionally, you will get
a FREE hardwood maple drying rack with the purchase of 4 or more mandrel pins.  Buy 4, 14, 24, 44, or any number of mandrel pins you want and I will custom make you a FREE drying rack.
The listed price of $5.95 is the price per pin.  To get a FREE wooden rack-you must purchase at least 4 pins
4-10 pin racks will be made out of
hard maple as
pictured, but larger racks will be custom made out of red oak.
Mr. Sakakeeny has generously allowed me to use his design for a large production run of these mandrel tips, both HEX based and the traditional 1/4″ circular based.  I have met with him in his studio and he has personally measured these tips to make sure they are to his specifications.  He has also started using my Quick Release handles with my HEX based tips both for himself and his students.
These tips
are
listed separately in my eBay store, with many configurations- both in size of rack, number of pins, and types of woods.
However, he has used his circular based pins, identical to the ones I am selling here, for years.  So – for those of you who are more comfortable sticking with the traditional handles, or already have an existing standard pin vise or thumb screw handle,  then these 1/4″ circular based tips will be the route to go.  If  you want to try the HEX based tips, then you will need to purchase the custom made Quick Release handles sold exclusively here by Nexus Woodwind Specialty. There are many styles of these handles listed in my store
The “Sakakeeny Style” stainless steel mandrel pin
is quite unique in that it is purposely
shorter in length so that it does not go too far beyond the first wire and has a precisely placed collar so that there is never any question about how far the mandrel pin should be inserted during the forming process. Here is a direct quote from Mr. Sakakeeny’s wonderful reed making eBook about his forming mandrel design:
“This method of forming the tube requires a forming mandrel that is not too long and that is fairly narrow at its tip. At full insertion, it should only extend a few millimeters past the first wire. At its bottom or hilt, it should be about 5mm in diameter. If the forming mandrel is too long, the cane will probably crack.”

Mr. Sakakeeny prefers removable tips,  and recommends keeping the reed on the same forming mandrel tip during the drying process, as well as the wrapping process.  I have many listings for his, and other styles of removable tips and the companion drying racks  in my store.
Do a search for George Sakakeeny.  He is an amazing player
and professor of bassoon for over 26 years at the Oberlin Conservatory.
Mr. Sakakeeny also has just released on iTunes a reed making “eBook” which is revolutionary in concept.   Not only is the content enlightening but within the book are numerous video clips of Mr Sakakeeny explaining and demonstrating all of his  concepts and methodologies.  It is unlike any reed making tutorial you will ever come across.  Check it out!!!!

The pins listed here are made of high grade stainless steel, per Mr. Sakakeeny’s insistence…..
are precision made from stainless steel, and will never rust or tarnish.
Although slightly more costly, the choice of stainless steel for these mandrels (not brass or standard less expensive steel), guarantees these tips will last a lifetime,  and additionally, provide an extremely smooth surface for forming.
If you want to purchase more than one tip, each additional one will shipped
FREE of CHARGE
(not to exceed 20 tips…after that-.20 per tip)
If you buy this, or any other tool, I can include and ship any cane order you place for
NO
additional cost in shipping.
Flat rate shipping in US is $3.95.
